Bans a user from the right-click menu and opens a case: open the member's menu, pick Apps, then Ban. It shares its Command Access rules with /ban. Discord shows it only to members with Ban Members by default. The bot checks that the Moderation service is enabled ("Sentinel is not enabled for this server.") and that the moderator is an Administrator or holds a moderator role from the Settings page ("No permission."). Like /ban, it also works on someone who is no longer in the server. The server owner and bots can never be banned, and a member who is still in the server must rank below the moderator ("Cannot action that member.").
A form titled "Ban Name" opens with 2 fields. Reason is required, takes up to 512 characters and is recorded on the case. "Delete messages (days, 0 to 7)" starts at 1: 0 keeps their messages, and an empty field also means 1. Anything other than a whole number from 0 to 7 is refused with "Delete messages takes a whole number of days from 0 to 7." When the form is sent, the bot runs the Sentinel, moderator, panic lock and target checks again and checks that the account is not frozen, since a form can stay open for a while.
A ban from this menu is always permanent. With "Confirm before destructive actions" on, the bot first asks "Ban @member (permanent)? Reason: ..." with Confirm and Cancel buttons. Only the moderator who ran it can answer, and the prompt expires after 30 seconds.
From there it runs the same action as /ban. When the member is still in the server and "DM on ban" is on, the ban DM goes out first (stock text "You have been banned from {server}: {reason}", followed by a web appeal link when the dashboard has a public address), because a ban cuts the bot's contact with them. Then the ban is applied. If Discord refuses it, the moderator is told and no case is opened. On success the bot opens a ban case and posts a "Ban" card with the duration "Permanent" to the moderation log channel. The reply is the user's name followed by "banned (permanent). Case #12". For a user who was not in the server, "They were not in the server, so the ban is recorded now and applies if they try to join." comes before the case number. Only the moderator sees it.
Good to know
- For a temporary ban, use /ban with a duration. /unban lifts this one.
- With ban sync or a ban network set up on the Ban evasion page, the ban is passed on to the linked servers.
- With anonymous moderation on, the log card says "the moderation team" instead of naming the moderator, and so does {moderator} in the DM.
- While an anti-nuke panic lockdown is on, only the server owner, Sentinel's extra owners and the anti-nuke exempt users and roles can run it.
