How to Build and Run a Garry's Mod Discord Community With YourBot

Garry's Mod is not one multiplayer game with one queue, one party size, or one community model. It is a platform for community-built gamemodes, and in 2026 the communities that thrive tend to organize around a specific ruleset, server identity, Workshop stack, staff structure, and social contract. DarkRP and other roleplay families remain the center of gravity. Trouble in Terrorist Town and TTT2 remain core social-deduction modes. StarWarsRP, SCP-RP, HL2RP, Mafia/City/Police/Military RP, Zombie Survival, Sandbox/build communities, Prop Hunt, Murder, Homicide/Z-City, Metrostroi, and smaller minigame ecosystems all still exist—but they need very different Discord workflows.

That is the first rule of a good Garry's Mod Discord: the gamemode shapes the Discord.

A DarkRP server may need job rules, whitelist applications, staff reports, faction leadership, server economy notices, and large community events. A serious Helix-based RP server may need character applications, faction whitelists, lore, canon/event records, and tightly separated in-character versus out-of-character spaces. TTT and TTT2 need round rules, RDM reports, anti-ghosting policy, map/event nights, and voice rules that do not leak living/dead information. Prop Hunt and Murder need much lighter structures. Sandbox and build communities care more about Workshop content, contraption sharing, build nights, and addon compatibility than applications or ranked rosters.

This guide builds a fictional multi-server network called Lambda Junction, with roughly 276 Discord members and three Garry's Mod servers:

The network also maintains interest roles and future planning space for StarWarsRP, SCP-RP, HL2RP/serious RP, Zombie Survival, Homicide/Z-City, and other modes without pretending it actively hosts every gamemode at once.

YourBot handles the Discord-side foundation: onboarding, moderation, tickets, group/session coordination, events, temporary voice, announcements, social feeds, analytics, and giveaways. Garry's Mod remains authoritative for the actual Source server, player slots, in-game roles, jobs, whitelists, TTT roles, bans, ULX/FAdmin permissions, Workshop content, maps, gamemode code, player inventory/economy, and live server state.

Start With the Right Garry's Mod Community Model

Garry's Mod is a platform, not a single ruleset

The default Garry's Mod installation ships with Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town available through the gamemode selector; the community adds the rest through addons and custom gamemodes. Facepunch's own wiki highlights DarkRP, Murder, Prop Hunt, Sandbox, and TTT as major gamemode families, while the Steam store explicitly points players toward TTT and Prop Hunt as examples of what the community has built.

That has two practical consequences.

First, do not write generic rules such as:

Maximum party size: 5

Garry's Mod has no universal party size. A dedicated server owner sets the server's slot count, and the gamemode decides what those players actually do.

Second, do not assume that an RP Discord and a TTT Discord should look alike merely because both launch through Garry's Mod.

The 2026 server ecosystem is still heavily roleplay-driven

A September 2026 server-directory snapshot is not a perfect census—server naming and gamemode classification are inconsistent—but it gives a useful picture of what is actually active.

The clearest finding is that RP remains the dominant ecosystem.

A recent GameMonitoring snapshot tracked:

DarkRP's own Facepunch wiki describes it as one of, if not the largest, Garry's Mod gamemodes and notes that it has been adapted into CityRP, PoliceRP, SCP-RP, StarWarsRP, ZombieRP, MilitaryRP, HL2RP, and other variants.

That does not mean every serious roleplay server literally runs DarkRP. Helix remains an actively documented framework for building roleplay schemas, especially serious RP/HL2RP-style communities. The point is that roleplay is a family of communities, not one configuration.

TTT is smaller than the RP ecosystem but still foundational

Trouble in Terrorist Town remains one of Garry's Mod's built-in flagship gamemodes. Facepunch continued shipping TTT-specific fixes and improvements in both the April and September 2026 updates.

TTT's core premise remains straightforward:

TTT2 is also actively maintained as a modern successor/framework. It adds modern UI, custom-role support, compatibility tooling, and an ecosystem of additional roles and extensions.

The practical Discord lesson is important: TTT has strong social rules but no useful persistent class roster. Traitor, Innocent, Detective, and TTT2 custom roles are assigned in-game per round. They should not become permanent Discord identity roles.

Other modes still matter, but at different scales

Recent server monitoring also shows meaningful activity around:

Do not translate that into "only host DarkRP." Instead, decide whether your community is:

  1. one dedicated gamemode server,
  2. one network with several servers,
  3. one rotating casual server,
  4. or an umbrella Discord for several independently operated GMod projects.

Lambda Junction is model #2.

Server capacity is configured by the operator

Garry's Mod does not give this guide one canonical player cap for DarkRP, TTT, Sandbox, or Prop Hunt.

Server operators set maxplayers. Community servers in current monitoring range from small 8–16-player specialty servers to 100–128-player roleplay and Zombie Survival servers.

Lambda Junction intentionally configures:

Those are Lambda Junction's capacities, not universal Garry's Mod limits.

YourBot Group Finder should normally coordinate a manageable cohort or session. Beacon should handle full-server event attendance.

Workshop content is part of the community's operational model

Garry's Mod's Steam Workshop is enormous. Servers routinely depend on:

Facepunch supports loading Workshop collections directly on a dedicated server. A collection can be attached at startup, and modern server builds can also load Workshop IDs from a configuration file.

That means your Discord should tell members:

Do not bury those facts in one five-year-old pinned message.

Mounted Source content can matter

Some Garry's Mod maps and addons expect content from other Source games such as Counter-Strike: Source or other mountable games. Garry's Mod's official server documentation supports mounting legally obtained content on dedicated servers.

The Steam store also warns that some multiplayer servers/gamemodes may require ownership of other games.

A useful Discord therefore has a clean #content-and-downloads reference rather than fifty support messages saying:

Why is everything purple and black?

Current game state: September 2026

Garry's Mod received a major update on September 16, 2026.

Important current changes include:

The 64-bit option matters for addon-heavy RP servers because the old 32-bit address-space ceiling was a common source of memory pressure/crashes.

Do not interpret "64-bit available" as "flip production blindly." Binary modules and addons should still be tested on staging before a major runtime change.

1. Create the Foundation With Start Your Server

For a multi-server GMod network, Start Your Server should organize around server identity and workflow, not every job, weapon, TTT role, or addon.

A common failure is importing the in-game hierarchy directly into Discord:

Do not do that.

Copy-ready community brief

- Never store GSLT tokens, RCON passwords, SSH/FTP/SFTP credentials, database passwords, Steam Web API keys, Workshop uploader credentials, or server control-panel credentials in Discord or YourBot.
- Do not ask players to install third-party executables to join the server.
- Treat suspicious Workshop reuploads, addon backdoors, fake FastDL/download links, pirated paid scripts, malicious executables, phishing, and doxxing as risks.
- Discord moderation is not Garry's Mod server enforcement unless staff intentionally applies a separate in-game action.
- Discord roles do not automatically grant ULX/FAdmin/SAM/server-console permissions.
- Discord whitelists do not automatically modify DarkRP/Helix jobs unless a verified integration exists.
- Do not expose player IP addresses, real names, or private server credentials.

Review before applying

Garry's Mod networks often have complicated existing permission trees. Review this more carefully than a fresh game community.

Use See it as for:

Check three things especially:

  1. New members can find connection/content instructions.
  2. RP staff cannot automatically see developer secrets unless intended.
  3. Developers do not automatically inherit player-report/appeal access unless intended.

Keep deletions disabled on the first build. Server communities accumulate years of history, application records, screenshots, and rule discussions; do not erase that while reorganizing.

Announcements schedules and Social Feed subscriptions require manual finishing steps.

2. Welcome: Ask What They Play, Not Which TTT Role They Are

Welcome should help members navigate a multi-mode network without giving them operational authority.

Recommended opt-in roles:

Optional regional roles can help event scheduling:

Do not create Discord self-roles for:

Those are in-game or staff-authorized concepts.

A useful greeting:

Welcome to Lambda Junction. Pick the Garry's Mod servers and modes you actually play. TTT roles are assigned in-game each round; RP jobs and whitelists are managed through the server's own systems. Check #server-status-and-connect and #content-and-downloads before joining. Never share Steam credentials or install random third-party programs because somebody says the server needs them.

For an RP-heavy network, use Welcome to route new members toward a Ticket for whitelist-required jobs rather than granting the whitelist role directly.

Test: Join with a test account, select TTT2, Sandbox / Build, and Events, and confirm it receives only those interest roles and no staff/whitelist role.

3. Sentinel: Protect the Discord From Addon, Account, and Community Abuse

Garry's Mod communities have a unique security surface because members routinely share Workshop links, Lua addons, content packs, hosting files, maps, scripts, and server tools.

Focus Sentinel on:

Do not use a naive rule that bans the word backdoor, exploit, RCON, or Lua. Developers and moderators legitimately need to discuss those terms.

Start strict rules in dry-run or report-only mode, then review false positives.

Facepunch's Workshop rules explicitly prohibit malicious/backdoored addons. Its Server Operator Rules also prohibit exposing private player information and asking players to install third-party software.

That maps cleanly into a Discord policy:

If joining the GMod server requires downloading a random .exe, stop and ask staff.

Discord moderation is not Garry's Mod server enforcement.

A Sentinel warning does not automatically ban the person's SteamID from a Source server. If the network wants Discord cases synchronized with server bans, that would be a separate, carefully authenticated integration.

Test: Post a staff-only dummy message containing a fake executable-download domain and verify Sentinel logs it without blocking legitimate Steam Workshop URLs.

4. Tickets: Reports, Appeals, Whitelists, and Content Problems Need Different Routes

Garry's Mod networks can drown in tickets if everything becomes "General Support."

Lambda Junction uses five intake routes.

Player / Staff Report

Ask for:

Never ask for a password or account login.

Ban Appeal

Ask for:

YourBot Tickets routes the appeal. It does not modify the GMod ban list.

RP Whitelist / Character Application

For DarkRP/serious RP:

For serious Helix-style RP, use a longer application form or link a maintained application workflow. Do not place passwords, server database IDs, or staff notes into public channels.

Server / Content Issue

Ask for:

Do not ask members to upload their entire Garry's Mod directory.

Event / Community Request

Ask for:

Secrets that never belong in a ticket

Never request:

Test: Open one TTT RDM report, one RP whitelist application, and one Workshop-content issue. Confirm each routes to different staff teams and that developers do not automatically see private appeals unless configured.

5. Group Finder: Coordinate Sessions, Not a Fictional Universal Party

Read-only inspection of YourBot's current develop branch shows Garry's Mod is not in Group Finder's automatic game-detection list.

The setup wizard would otherwise add the generic Quick Group template with a default size of five.

That is not a Garry's Mod rule.

Because GMod server capacities are operator-configured, Lambda Junction treats Group Finder sizes as session targets.

Create the first template

Template Name: Lambda TTT2 Session
Game: Garry's Mod
Default Party Size: 16
Default Expiry: 2 hours
Description: Organize a TTT2 session on Lambda TTT2. This is a Discord attendance target, not the server's universal game cap. The production server has 32 slots. State start time, whether the session is vanilla-plus or special-role night, voice policy, and whether new players are welcome.

Sixteen is Lambda Junction's comfortable planned-session target. The actual TTT2 production server has 32 slots.

Additional templates

Template Planning target What it means
TTT2 Session 16 Planned cohort on the 32-slot TTT2 server; not a hard GMod cap
TTT2 Full Night 32 Full-server event when all public slots are intentionally being organized
DarkRP Crew / Faction Activity 6 Small coordinated group inside the 96-slot RP server
RP Police / Emergency Shift 8 Community target; obey current in-game job limits
Sandbox Build Crew 8 Builders collaborating on one project/session
Prop Hunt Session 12 Planned cohort on Party Box; server has 24 slots
Murder Session 12 Planned social-deduction cohort; server has 24 slots
Zombie Survival Event Team 20 If/when hosted; actual server cap must be checked
StarWarsRP Event Squad 8 Future/event planning unit, not entire RP server
SCP-RP Department Group 8 Future/event planning unit, not entire Site population

Do not use Group Finder to represent a 96-slot DarkRP population.

Example live listing

Title: TTT2 — Vanilla+ Friday
Game: Garry's Mod
Server: Lambda TTT2
Server Capacity: 32
Planned Session Target: 16
Current Signups: 11/16
Region: North America
Start: 8:00 PM Eastern
Ruleset: TTT2 Vanilla+
Custom Roles: Limited server-approved set
Map Pool: Standard Lambda rotation
New Players: Welcome
Pregame Voice: Optional
Active-Round Discord Voice: Not allowed
Session: ~2 hours
Notes:
- Joining this Discord listing does not reserve a Source server slot.
- In-game TTT roles are randomized per round.
- Dead players may not relay information to living players.

Group Finder's ready checks and discussion threads are useful for getting a session together. The actual player connects through Garry's Mod.

Test: Fill the 16-person TTT2 session and confirm the seventeenth person goes to the waitlist. Then create a six-person DarkRP crew and confirm it does not attempt to represent the entire 96-slot server.

6. Beacon Events: Use the Actual Server Slot Configuration

Beacon is the better tool for full-server or staff-run events.

Examples:

DarkRP city event example

Event: Downtown RP — Election & City Crisis Event
Server: Lambda Downtown RP
Server Capacity: 96
Public RSVP Target: 80
Staff/Reserved Slots: 16
Date/Time: Saturday 8:00 PM Eastern
Map: rp_downtown_lambda_v4
Rules Version: RP Rules 6.4
Whitelisted Jobs: Event-specific list in #rp-events
Voice:
- In-character: use approved in-game communication
- Discord: staff/event staging only
Waitlist: Enabled

The public target is 80 because Lambda intentionally keeps room for staff, organizers, replacements, and natural public traffic.

TTT2 tournament example

Event: Lambda TTT2 Community Night
Server Capacity: 32
Participant Target: 28
Reserved Staff/Spectator Slots: 4
Rules: TTT Rules 3.2
Custom Roles: Server-approved only
Discord Voice During Rounds: Prohibited

Beacon RSVP does not:

Test: Create a 28-seat TTT event, fill it, enable a waitlist, and confirm four staff/reserve slots remain intentionally outside the public RSVP count.

7. Join-to-Create Voice: RP Metagaming and TTT Ghosting Change the Design

Voice is where a generic Discord guide can actively make a Garry's Mod server worse.

TTT / TTT2

TTT relies on information asymmetry.

If dead players stay in a Discord call with living players, they can accidentally or deliberately reveal:

That is ghosting.

Lambda Junction therefore uses:

If your server has a special casual rule allowing external voice, document it clearly—but understand that it changes TTT's information model.

YourBot cannot detect the live TTT round and mute Discord members automatically through Join-to-Create. The community rule still matters.

Roleplay

External Discord voice can create metagaming:

For RP:

Sandbox / build communities

Discord voice is much less dangerous here.

Create a Join Build lobby with a limit appropriate to the project, such as 8–12.

Party Box

Prop Hunt and Murder can also be harmed by dead-player ghosting. Apply the same information discipline used for TTT.

Test: Verify TTT interest roles cannot access staff voice, and confirm the rules panel explicitly tells members when Discord voice is prohibited during active rounds.

8. Announcements: Treat Rules, Workshop Revisions, and Server Updates as Versioned Operations

Garry's Mod networks change constantly.

Use Announcements for:

Current September 2026 example

Garry's Mod — September 2026 Update

Facepunch released the September update on Sep 16.

Relevant to Lambda Junction:
- Windows 64-bit game client is available.
- Windows 64-bit dedicated server binaries are available.
- 64-bit Hammer/developer tools are available.
- TTT received additional fixes/improvements.
- Sandbox UI/content received updates.

Lambda production plan:
1. Validate binary modules and addons on staging.
2. Test Downtown RP Workshop collection.
3. Test TTT2 custom roles/weapons.
4. Test mounted content.
5. Announce production restart.
6. Promote only after staff sign-off.

Do not download random replacement DLLs from Discord to "fix" an addon.

Rules should have versions

Instead of:

Read the pinned rules.

Use:

Downtown RP Rules — v6.4 — effective Sep 20, 2026
TTT2 Rules — v3.2 — effective Sep 18, 2026
Network Conduct — v4.1

When a rule changes, announce the diff at a high level.

Start Your Server can enable Announcements, but actual recurring schedules are a manual finishing step.

Test: Schedule a test maintenance notice five minutes ahead with @Server Updates, verify it posts once, and ensure it does not mention everyone.

9. Social Feeds: Add Official Garry's Mod Steam News Manually

Read-only inspection of YourBot's current Social Feeds catalog shows no curated Garry's Mod entry and no catalog entry for App ID 4000.

Garry's Mod's verified Steam App ID is:

4000

Create a manual feed:

Source: Steam
Steam App ID: 4000
Display Name: Garry's Mod — Official Updates
Destination: #network-announcements or #gmod-updates
Ping Role: @Server Updates (optional)
Digest: Off or hourly

The inspected YourBot Steam source uses:

This is a good fit because Facepunch uses Steam announcements for upcoming and released Garry's Mod updates.

Do not claim this feed tells you:

Those are Lambda operations, not Garry's Mod publisher news.

Test: Add App ID 4000, run a preview/test post, and verify it lands in the correct channel without an unwanted role ping.

10. Analytics: Measure the Discord, Not the Source Server

YourBot Analytics can help Lambda Junction answer:

It does not know, by default:

Do not use Discord message counts as a staff-performance score or player-skill rating.

If Lambda later wants live Source server metrics, that is a separate external integration—not built-in Analytics.

Test: Generate normal Discord activity and a Group Finder session, then verify private applications/appeals and DEVELOPMENT channels are excluded where the community wants them excluded.

11. Giveaways: Do Not Pretend a Discord Draw Modifies Steam or the Game Server

Safe prizes include:

YourBot does not automatically grant:

Never ask for a Steam password or Steam Guard code to deliver a prize.

If a server perk is the prize, staff must grant it through the server's own trusted administration workflow.

Test: Run a staff-only giveaway for Choose next Party Box mode, verify winner/reroll behavior, then use a similarly harmless public drawing.

What Garry's Mod Communities Are Actually Playing in 2026?

A Garry's Mod guide that ignores the current server browser is going to feel ten years out of date.

The following is a point-in-time snapshot, not a scientific global census. Public server monitors classify gamemodes inconsistently; one SCP-RP server may report darkrp, another scprp, another a custom base; Homicide and Metrostroi servers can appear under Sandbox; TTT and TTT2 use several labels. Player counts also swing heavily by time zone.

Still, the pattern is strong enough to guide Discord design.

1. Roleplay is still the biggest ecosystem

Current directory data shows RP everywhere.

DarkRP alone appears in more than a thousand tracked servers. At one recent crawl, the darkrp gamemode slice showed:

The wider rp_ map ecosystem is much larger still, though that is not a clean one-mode statistic.

Current highly populated servers include:

For a new community, the takeaway is not "copy DarkRP." It is:

If your server is RP, the Discord must support applications, staff cases, rule versioning, faction/job information, event operations, and long-lived community identity.

2. StarWarsRP / Clone Wars RP remains a major branch

A recent monitor snapshot showed more than 200 starwarsrp servers, with many online and several carrying substantial populations.

StarWarsRP often needs:

Do not make every in-game military rank a Discord role unless it serves an actual Discord permission/notification function.

3. SCP-RP / containment RP is still highly visible

SCP-RP is one of the strongest RP subgenres in the current browser.

Server directories show large Site-based communities with 100+ configured slots and, at times, high active population.

Discord patterns commonly include:

Again: Discord department roles do not automatically make someone that role in-game.

4. TTT and TTT2 remain core community-night modes

TTT is still special even though it no longer dominates public server counts like some RP branches.

Why it still deserves first-class treatment:

At one recent snapshot, an active US TTT server showed 22/32 players.

TTT works extremely well as a scheduled Discord event because a community can coordinate enough players to make rounds lively without needing an always-full public server.

5. Zombie Survival still has real population

Zombie Survival is not just historical nostalgia.

A recent directory snapshot showed:

One server was above 100 concurrent players in that snapshot.

A ZS-focused Discord needs:

6. Sandbox/build is still foundational

Sandbox remains Garry's Mod's default mode and is central to:

Public server monitoring showed hundreds of Sandbox-named servers, but raw "Sandbox" counts are messy because many custom systems report themselves as Sandbox.

Discord should focus on:

rather than applications and combat rosters.

7. Prop Hunt is still a classic—but better as a session/event mode for many networks

Prop Hunt remains a canonical Garry's Mod mode and is documented directly on the official wiki.

The current public directory still lists many Prop Hunt servers, but concurrent population in the sampled crawl was light compared with RP and some Zombie Survival servers.

For a general network, that makes Prop Hunt excellent for:

without requiring an entire 24/7 Discord category.

8. Murder is still around, but usually lighter

Murder remains officially documented and easy to explain:

Current public-server population is lighter than RP/ZS.

Use it like Prop Hunt: a good event/community mode unless your audience specifically wants a Murder-first community.

9. Homicide / Z-City is a visible modern niche

Current server rankings show Homicide and Z-City-style servers among high-ranked/currently active GMod servers, especially in Russian-language communities.

These modes are more realism/horror/combat-oriented than classic TTT.

If Lambda Junction ever launches one, give it its own rules and content pack rather than forcing it into TTT assumptions.

10. Metrostroi remains a durable simulation niche

Metrostroi is unusually persistent.

Current server monitoring still shows many active subway-simulation servers and multiple maps with dedicated communities.

That is a different Discord entirely:

It belongs in the "GMod is a platform" conversation because it proves that server communities do not have to be RP or PvP to survive.

Design RP Discords Differently for DarkRP and Serious RP

"RP" is too broad a category to design from.

DarkRP and DarkRP-derived communities

DarkRP is a non-serious roleplay framework by default and includes systems such as:

Many server owners heavily customize it.

For Discord, prioritize:

Do not edit DarkRP core files merely because the server wants customization; DarkRP's maintainers explicitly recommend using the modification layer rather than hacking core files.

Serious RP / Helix-style communities

Helix is an actively maintained RP framework built for schemas.

Serious RP often needs:

The Discord should become more document-like and less "job list" oriented.

Tickets are useful for applications, but a very high-volume serious RP community may eventually need a dedicated application plugin/workflow.

HL2RP

HL2RP communities often need:

Never assume one HL2RP server's lore or faction hierarchy applies to another.

StarWarsRP / Clone Wars RP

Typical Discord workflows:

The Discord should not blindly replicate every in-game rank. Create roles only when they change Discord permissions, notifications, or access.

SCP-RP

Typical workflows:

Again, keep department and staff authority explicit.

MilitaryRP / PoliceRP / CityRP / MafiaRP

These variants can be DarkRP-derived or use custom frameworks.

Do not assume the codebase from the server name.

The Discord structure should be derived from:

not from the marketing label in the browser.

TTT and TTT2 Need Anti-Ghosting Discord Rules

TTT is one of the clearest examples where Discord can break the gamemode if configured badly.

Do not give permanent Discord roles for round roles

Never self-select:

The game decides those roles every round.

Define RDM/KOS language

TTT communities need clear rules for:

The exact definitions should match your server, especially with TTT2 custom roles.

Keep Discord voice out of active rounds

The simplest rule is:

If you are alive in TTT, use the game's approved communication. Do not use Lambda Discord voice during the active round.

After death, do not relay information to living players.

TTT2 custom roles require a living rules document

TTT2's major strength is custom roles.

That also means the Discord rulebook can become stale if admins change the role pack.

Maintain:

TTT2 Role Set — v2.8
TTT Rules — v3.2
Map Pool — Sep 2026

and announce changes.

Reports belong in Tickets, not public debate

RDM reports become toxic when every case is litigated in #general.

Use:

Do not make every round dispute a Discord spectacle.

Workshop, Content Packs, and Dedicated Server Hygiene

For Garry's Mod, the content pipeline is part of community reliability.

Dedicated server

Facepunch's official server guide uses SteamCMD and dedicated-server App ID:

4020

A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) should be configured for the server. The official documentation notes that a missing token harms server ranking.

Do not paste the GSLT into Discord.

Workshop collections

A dedicated server can mount a Workshop collection using:

+host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID

The collection must be public or unlisted for the server to access it.

Collections can also include nested collections.

Auto-updates need operational discipline

The official Workshop server documentation notes a real tradeoff:

A mature network should therefore:

  1. keep a staging server
  2. pin/document the production collection
  3. review high-risk addon updates
  4. test binary modules after major GMod updates
  5. promote changes intentionally
  6. announce content revisions

Do not solve this by downloading random fixes from Discord.

Workshop content versus client download

A server having an addon is not automatically the same thing as the client receiving every required asset.

Garry's Mod supports:

Workshop delivery is usually the cleanest path for large content packs.

Keep a member-facing page/channel saying:

Downtown RP Collection: revision 2026-09-21
TTT2 Collection: revision 2026-09-18
Party Box Collection: revision 2026-09-05

Mounted game content:
- Counter-Strike: Source: required for specific maps/assets
- Black Mesa: optional/currently used only on event server

Only list dependencies you actually use.

Mounted games

Current Garry's Mod supports mounting various Source-engine games. The September 2026 update added standalone Insurgency (2014) to the mountable-games list.

If a map requires mounted content:

64-bit Windows

The September 2026 update made 64-bit Windows:

available broadly.

For an addon-heavy RP server, that can be valuable.

But test:

before switching production.

Facepunch Server Operator Rules matter

Community servers can be blacklisted for violating Facepunch's operator rules.

Among other things, server operators should not:

That should be reflected in the Discord staff handbook.

One Discord Can Run Several GMod Servers—If Permissions Stay Mode-Specific

Multi-server networks fail when "Staff" becomes one all-powerful role.

Lambda Junction instead separates:

Network-level

RP-specific

TTT-specific

Party Box

A great TTT moderator is not automatically qualified to approve serious RP characters.

A developer does not automatically need access to private ban appeals.

A whitelist reviewer does not need RCON.

Use least privilege.

Add a GMod Server Hub Registry Only When You Need It

Lambda Junction can launch with the built-ins.

Announcements can publish changes. Tickets can receive issues. Beacon schedules events. Group Finder coordinates sessions.

A custom project becomes useful when the network has enough servers that members and staff repeatedly ask:

Before building, check the Marketplace for a maintained solution. If none fits, create GMod Server Hub Registry.

- Only configured editor roles may mutate records.
- Revoking Developer/Content Manager access removes editor access on the next request.
- Direct-record URLs enforce the same authorization as list pages.
- Exports, if added, are staff-only and audited.

Audit:
Record:
- server record creation
- connect-address changes
- capacity changes
- Workshop collection/revision changes
- rules version changes
- status changes
- environment changes
- retire/restore operations

Security rules:
- Reject fields that look like RCON/GSLT/password/API-token storage.
- Never expose staff-only deployment notes to Member view.
- Do not store player IPs.
- Do not execute console commands.
- Do not download Workshop files.
- Do not invoke server updates.
- Do not restart Source servers.

Explicit non-capabilities:
- Does not query live player count.
- Does not verify server uptime.
- Does not issue RCON.
- Does not update Workshop addons.
- Does not change gamemode/map.
- Does not grant ULX/FAdmin/SAM ranks.
- Does not ban/unban SteamIDs.
- Does not approve RP whitelists in-game.
- Does not know TTT round roles.
- Does not replace Tickets, Announcements, Beacon, or Group Finder.

Acceptance tests:
1. Member can see production TTT2 record and Workshop collection.
2. Member cannot see staging RP deployment notes.
3. Content Manager changes Workshop revision and audit entry appears.
4. Moderator can view public server metadata but cannot edit.
5. Revoking Developer removes edit access.
6. Direct URL cannot reveal staff-only record.
7. Server A Discord installation cannot read Server B registry.
8. Retired server disappears from default production list.
9. Attempt to save an RCON/GSLT secret is rejected.
10. No workflow performs an external network call.

Review, test, and continue through the SDK

Review the generated plan, source, manifest, requested capabilities, storage, commands, and dashboard authorization.

Version 1 should need no external network access.

Test as:

Test:

Continue through the current YourBot SDK workflow:

pip install yourbot-sdk
yourbot new gmod_server_hub
cd gmod_server_hub
yourbot dev --watch
yourbot validate
yourbot doctor

The current YourBot SDK documentation lists v0.10.1 and supports local new, dev, validate, and doctor workflows. Marketplace publication remains optional.

Passing validation does not prove that the server metadata, rules versions, or permissions are operationally correct.

Run a Complete First-Week Member Journey

Scenario Successful result
New member joins Verifies, chooses TTT2/Party Box/RP interests, and can find connection/content instructions.
RP applicant Opens whitelist Ticket; Discord acceptance does not automatically grant an in-game job.
TTT session Group Finder fills the planned cohort; rules clearly prohibit active-round Discord ghosting.
RP event Beacon attendance respects configured public/staff slot reserves.
Workshop update Content Manager posts a new revision and members can find the current collection.
Missing content report Ticket captures server/map/error context without requesting credentials or full game folder.
Staff separation TTT Moderator cannot automatically see RP whitelist applications unless explicitly allowed.
Temporary voice Build/social voice works; TTT active-round policy remains clearly documented.
Registry access Member sees production server metadata, but staging/deployment notes remain staff-only.

Fix confusing rules and permissions before adding another automation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most popular Garry's Mod gamemode families in 2026?

Roleplay remains the largest visible ecosystem, especially DarkRP and RP-derived/custom servers. StarWarsRP, SCP-RP, HL2RP, Mafia/City RP, and other RP variants remain highly visible. TTT/TTT2 is still a core classic and actively maintained. Zombie Survival has meaningful current population, while Sandbox, Prop Hunt, Murder, Homicide/Z-City, Metrostroi, and smaller minigames remain active at different scales.

Should one Discord host both RP and TTT communities?

Yes, if the community is genuinely a network and you keep rules, staff roles, applications, voice policy, and announcements mode-specific. If the audiences barely overlap, separate Discords may be cleaner.

What is the Garry's Mod party size?

There is no universal Garry's Mod party size. Dedicated server slot capacity is configured by the operator and gamemodes use players differently. Group Finder templates should use your actual session design, not the generic five-person preset.

Does YourBot automatically detect Garry's Mod in Group Finder?

Not in the read-only develop revision inspected for this guide. Create explicit Garry's Mod templates manually.

Is Garry's Mod in YourBot's Social Feeds catalog?

Not in the inspected curated catalog. Add the generic Steam source manually with App ID 4000.

Should TTT players use Discord voice during a round?

Normally no. External voice lets dead players or informed players leak role/position information and creates ghosting risk. Use pregame/postgame voice unless your server has a deliberately different rule.

Should RP factions use Discord voice?

Only according to the server's rules. Serious RP often treats out-of-game coordination as metagaming unless it represents an approved radio/command channel.

How should I handle Workshop addons safely?

Use curated collections, staging/testing, clear revision notes, and official Workshop delivery. Review sensitive updates before production. Do not tell players to install random third-party executables.

Is 64-bit Garry's Mod live?

Yes. The September 16, 2026 update made 64-bit Windows client, dedicated server, and developer-tool builds available. Test addon/binary compatibility before changing production.

Can YourBot manage RCON, ULX, FAdmin, server bans, or Workshop deployment?

Not through the built-in services described here. The custom GMod Server Hub Registry is intentionally informational in version 1 and stores no secrets or external-control capability.

Build the Discord Around the Gamemode, Not the Executable

The most important fact about Garry's Mod has not changed: the community turns the sandbox into the game it wants to play.

That means the best Discord is not "a GMod Discord" in the abstract. It is a Discord for your actual GMod servers.

For Lambda Junction, Start Your Server creates the stable multi-server shell. Welcome lets members choose which modes they care about without granting in-game power. Sentinel protects a Workshop-heavy community from account and addon abuse. Tickets separate RP applications, appeals, reports, and content issues. Group Finder creates manageable session cohorts instead of inventing a universal party size. Beacon handles server-wide events. Temporary voice is intentionally constrained around TTT ghosting and RP metagaming. Announcements version rules and content stacks. Social Feeds brings in official Facepunch/Steam update notices. Analytics measures the Discord rather than pretending it is Source server telemetry.

Garry's Mod itself remains authoritative for the live server, gamemode, map, Workshop content, in-game roles, TTT round roles, RP jobs, whitelists, admin permissions, bans, and player state.

Use Start Your Server to establish or refine that Discord foundation. Add Plugin Builder only when a persistent workflow—such as a safe multi-server content/rules registry—has become a real operational need that the built-in services do not already solve.
